 What is BPH?

Understanding BPH
The prostate is a gland found under a man’s bladder. Its main job is to produce part of the fluid that makes up semen. The prostate also surrounds the urethra. This is the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body.

A sizeable problem
In healthy men, the prostate grows rapidly during puberty. It remains about the same size until around age 40. Normal aging can then cause the prostate to grow again. This is called benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH.

A tight situation
BPH is a normal part of aging. By itself, a large prostate causes no harm. The trouble is that the urethra passes right through the prostate. When the prostate becomes enlarged, it can squeeze the urethra. This can hinder urine flow and cause problems.

BPH and cancer
BPH is not cancer. Nor has it been shown to raise your risk of having prostate cancer. However, BPH and prostate cancer can cause similar symptoms. So be sure to check with your doctor if you have symptoms. He/she will want to rule out cancer first.
