  Treatment Options

Once your doctor is sure about the cause of your symptoms, there are several BPH treatment options your doctor may discuss with you:

Watch and wait
Maybe your symptoms don’t bother you or your prostate isn’t very enlarged. Your doctor may just keep a close eye on your condition.

Prescription medicines
For patients who are bothered by symptoms, there are 2 types of medicines your doctor may prescribe. Each works in different ways to help.
  • Medicines that relax smooth muscle tissue in parts of the
prostate, bladder, and urethra: Maybe your symptoms bother you, and your prostate is slightly enlarged. Your doctor may give you medicine that relaxes these muscles, making it easier to urinate. This type of medicine is the best option for symptom relief
  • Medicines that shrink the prostate: If your prostate has grown and your symptoms are mild, your doctor may prescribe this kind of drug. However, these medicines can take 6 to 12 months to begin to relieve symptoms

  • Combination therapy: Maybe your prostate is enlarged and your
symptoms bother you. Your doctor may prescribe both types of the drugs described above at the same time
Surgery
Combination therapy reduces the need for surgery. But minor procedures or surgery can help some patients.
