Getting a Diagnosis

There are tests to tell if you have BPH. Here are some of the methods doctors use:

Symptom score test
Your symptoms say a lot. The answers you give to questions about your symptoms can tell a doctor if you have BPH. Use the Symptom Screener tool to learn your symptom score. It is likely to be the same set of questions your doctor uses.

Rule out cancer first
BPH and prostate cancer are treated very differently. So it’s very important that doctors rule out prostate cancer first.

Physical exam
Sometimes, your doctor will feel your prostate with his/her gloved finger. This is called a digital rectal exam. The doctor will determine the size of the prostate and check for signs of tumor. It may be uncomfortable, but the test is very brief and provides your doctor with information that simply can’t be found any other way.

Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test
This test measures the blood level of a protein made by your prostate. This test can be used to rule out prostate cancer. A high PSA level can indicate BPH, prostate cancer, or an infection.
